Google Play Account Setup

5 min read

Before we can publish your app on the Google Play Store, you need to own a Google Play Developer account. This account belongs to you — not us — which means you stay in full control of your app and can manage it independently in the future.

Before you start

This takes around 20–30 minutes and is done entirely in your browser. You will need a credit or debit card. Use an email address you check regularly — Google will send important notifications to this address. The registration fee is a one-time payment of USD $25.

Creating your Google Play Developer account

1

Create a Google Account (skip if you already have one)

Go to accounts.google.com/signup and create a Google account. Use an email address you own and check regularly — this will be permanently linked to your Play Console.

Tip: You can use an existing Gmail account. If your business uses Google Workspace, you can also use your business email.

2

Go to the Google Play Console signup page

Visit play.google.com/console/signup. Make sure you are signed in to the correct Google account before proceeding.

3

Sign in and accept the initial prompt

Google will ask you to confirm the account you want to use for the Play Console. Choose the account you set up in Step 1.

4

Choose 'Personal' as your account type

Select 'Personal' unless you are representing a registered organisation. Like Apple, choosing the organisation option requires additional verification steps.

Tip: Do not choose 'Organisation' unless you have a registered business and are prepared for additional identity verification requirements.

5

Fill in your developer profile

Enter your developer name (this is what appears on the Play Store next to your app), contact email, phone number, and country. The developer name should be your business name or your own name.

6

Verify your identity

Google will ask you to upload a government-issued photo ID (passport or driver's licence). This is a one-time verification step and typically completes within a few hours.

7

Accept the Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement

Read through the agreement and accept the terms. This is the legal agreement governing how you distribute apps on the Play Store.

8

Pay the one-time registration fee — USD $25

Enter your credit or debit card details. Unlike Apple, this is a one-time fee — you will never be charged again for the same account.

9

Wait for the activation email

Google typically activates accounts within a few hours, but it can take up to 48 hours. You will receive an email confirming your account is ready.

10

Send us your Google Account email address

Once your account is active, send us the email address linked to your Google account. We will use it to invite ourselves as a team member on your Play Console.
